This beautiful example of 19th century Danish folk art was discovered by an expert antique restorer in rural Denmark several years ago. It is dated 1838. The piece had been painted over with the traditional Scandinavian grey color, probably in the early 20th century, and its original finish was totally concealed. This, in part, accounts for its well preserved state. The painstaking exposure of its original finish was accomplished primarily by careful scraping with a razor blade. The piece is now in original condition except for minor retouching and for the feet, which were added in the restoration.
